Greece Athens, Greece
Number of people taking this action: 250 or more
ACG is working towards sustainable campus practices and solutions! Limiting waste and fostering reuse are at the core of sustainable practices.  In view of the above and celebrating the “International Campus Sustainability Month” and our new recycling bins already placed around our campus, the ACG – Center of Excellence for Sustainability at the Office of Public Affairs is initiating a Waste Reduction and Recycling Campaign (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!) aiming at raising awareness and guiding you towards successful waste reduction and recycling daily practices. So, join us and help increase the overall percentage of recycled material! Together we can have a significant impact on and off campus!

'ACG goes plastic free' Campaign

Greece Athens, Greece
Number of people taking this action: 250 or more
Single use plastics  pose a serious issue/problem to our planet’s environmental wellbeing, particularly posing a grave threat to marine life, as well as affecting human health. In fact, there are numerous studies and statistics that show how pervasive plastic pollution has become, how plastics ends up in our oceans and other waterways, then to the stomachs of marine animals who mistake them for food or get entangled and die, and ultimately in our plates and our bodies when we consume seafood. Single-use plastic water bottles are used in excessive quantities on campus, as well as, other single-use plastic items (e.g. plastic cups, coffee cups, straws, etc.). Following the ACG 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'! -  Waste Reduction & Recycling campaign, we are initiating the 'ACG goes plastic free' 2018-2019 campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness about the harm single-use plastics pose to our planet and our health, as well as, educate the ACG community on how they can break free from single-use plastics by choosing the more sustainable options that are readily available.  The kick-off event for the campaign will be during 9-13 October 2018, but we have already launched the ACG reusable water bottle and the ACG hydration stations in order to encourage our community to skip the plastic water bottle and carry their reusable one everywhere they go! #ACGgoesplasticfree

Education Unites: From Camp to Campus

Greece Athens, Greece
Number of people taking this action: 50-250
An academic scholarship program for young refugees in Greece.  The goal of the program is to give opportunities to displaced students to continue their education; provide them with knowledge, skills and academic credits they can use either in Greece or in any other European country they move to in the future; help them get out of the camps and become integrated in local colleges; and offer young refugees hope for the future. The program is the result of the collaboration between the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Deree – The American College of Greece, the American College of Thessaloniki – Anatolia College, and Perrotis College – American Farm School. It offered two courses per student for the two semesters (Fall 2017 and Spring 2018) in the three U.S. affiliated colleges in Athens and Thessaloniki. The courses offered include preparatory English classes, academic classes in diverse fields based on the participants’ educational background, as well as vocational training. During the first week of October 2017, 78 young refugees started their academic studies as part of the “Education Unites: From Camp to Campus” scholarship program. After reviewing over 400 applications and interviewing dozens of refugees and asylum seekers, the three U.S. affiliated colleges selected the first group of students who began their academic studies. For the first semester of the academic year 2017-2018, 48 students have started classes at Deree, Athens, 14 students at The American College of Thessaloniki, and 16 more students at the Perrotis College in Thessaloniki.

From May 14-18, Deree students had the unique opportunity to participate in the first ever-interdepartmental academic weeklong workshop and field trip jointly held at the ACG Aghia Paraskevi campus and the Yalova Lagoon in Messinia. This five-day workshop was an immersive and experiential learning experience aimed at enhancing education for sustainability. Biology, environmental science, sociology and management came together in order for the participants to holistically understand and appreciate what we call an ecosystem. Participants gained hands-on experience by engaging in lab and field activities while simultaneously enjoying every aspect of this opportunity. This workshop & field trip will continue in the 2018-2019 academic year.
