Peace Boat visits the Maldives: beach clean up and film screening

Maldives Malé, Maldivas
Number of people taking this action: 50-250
Peace Boat's 99th Voyage will visit Malé, the capital of the Maldives, on September 17. Peace Boat will organize a range of events with UN Maldives and JCI Maldives, in support of the UN SDG Action Campaign and the Global Day of Action, on September 25. In the morning, a group of Peace Boat’s participants will meet a group of volunteers from the Junior Chamber International Kaafu (JCI Kaafu), a local organization affiliated with JCI Maldives aiming to empower young people to create positive change. Together they will take part in the clean up of a beach where large amounts of trash accumulate, especially plastic bottles and bags. In the afternoon, youth from the Maldives will visit Peace Boat’s vessel where they will have the chance to watch several short films from the ‘Film for Change’ project. UNDP and partner, Dhiraagu, launched this initiative in 2017, empowering young people to explore and form narratives on issues of social significance through the medium of film. The purpose is to stimulate dialogue on different social issues amongst young people, decision makers, and the wider community. The films screened will focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG13, Climate Action, and SDG14, Life Below Water.
