This year’s International Youth Day was “Intergenerational Solidarity”, with a focus on Creating a World for All Ages’. Mike Kendrick, an education specialist turned non-profit director, supported the UN’s recognition of this day to raise awareness of specific barriers to tackling ageism, through his work with his Wild Shots Outreach programme.
The programme uses photography to work with the local communities and their young people to break down myths and taboos linked to wildlife. This year’s programme addressed how local young people are disconnected to the natural heritage around them in South Africa due to lack of resources and access. Participants were given the chance to take part in five workshops and a game drive, where they saw amazing wildlife and captured their experiences with Canon cameras. The programme is supported by Canon Emea YPP to encourage young local people’s active participation in conversation, supporting the Sustainable Development Goals of Reduced Inequalities as well as Sustainable Cities and Communities.
